I know, I know… in a world of TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, and inbox overload, it can feel like posting something through a letterbox is a bit out of date! But here’s the truth: direct mail still works — and when it’s done well, it works brilliantly.
Why? Because it’s tangible. It’s personal. It interrupts the day in a good way. And unlike an email, it doesn’t get deleted with one swipe.
We’ve seen it first-hand ourselves. From planners and notebooks, brochures and simple postcards, direct mail has been one of the most effective tools for both us and our clients. That little bit of persistence, packaged with creative design, cuts through the noise.
Don’t just take my word for it. Dave Woolmer from Green Heart Horticultural put it perfectly:
“Always love receiving the colourful direct mail from Steve – this has literally just landed through my letterbox – a pen and notebook. If there’s a better example of how to use direct mail, I’m yet to experience it! They’re going straight on my work desk so it’s 100% achieved its purpose and Mr Wilson will now be omnipresent whilst I’m working on my business. And now I’ve got somewhere to scribble down how I can leverage direct mail in my own business.”
That says it all!
A few lessons we’ve learned along the way:
• Keep it simple. A single idea, a single call to action. Don’t use the whole zoo!
• Make it feel good. Nice design, nice paper, nice finish — it says more about your brand than you think.
• Tell a story. It’s not just paper, it’s a spark. The notebook with a pen. The planner that gets used all year. The brochure that sits on the desk. These things carry your message far longer than a fleeting ad.
• Be personal. Address it properly, write in a human voice... be you! That’s what makes it resonate.
Direct mail isn’t dead. It’s alive and kicking, precisely because it isn’t digital. It’s something you can hold, keep, and remember.
Maybe it’s time to think about what might pop through your customers’ letterbox... Let's talk!
