Good enough… or half-baked?

There’s never been a time when it’s been easier to create your own marketing. With tools like Canva and ChatGPT, most businesses can now produce something that looks perfectly presentable. A flyer. A social post. An email. Something that does the job and ticks the box.

And in many ways, that’s a good thing.

But it reminds me of the gingham cloth challenge on The Great British Bake Off.

All the contestants are given the same ingredients, a basic recipe, and clear instruction to make this cake or that pastry like Mary or Paul's. They all manage to produce something that resembles the cake or pastry they’re meant to make. But let's be honest, none of them come close to Mary Berry’s florentines or Paul Hollywood’s sausage roll!!

That’s the challenge with tools like Canva.
They make everyone think they can bake!

Now, I’m a firm believer that good is good enough. But the real question is — who’s deciding what “good enough” actually is?

Because marketing that’s just about “looking OK” can quietly undermine the quality of the service behind it. Half-baked promotions. Social posts with a soggy bottom. Materials that don’t quite reflect the care, experience and professionalism you bring to your business and service.

Over the years, we’ve taken a lot of “good enough” design and turned it into something with real impact. Not louder. Not trendier. Just clearer, more confident, and far more effective.

Design isn’t about making things look nice.
It’s about judgement. Experience. Knowing what to push, what to hold back, and how everything works together over time.
