Persistent beats patchy. Every time.

It’s something I see all the time!

A business invests in a new logo. Then a website. Then maybe a flyer or a social post when things go a bit quiet. Each piece, on its own, might be perfectly decent. Well designed. Well intentioned. But there’s no rhythm to it. No continuity. No follow-through. It’s patchy! And patchy marketing doesn’t build anything.

Why does marketing feel inconsistent for so many businesses?

Most businesses don’t set out to be inconsistent. They’re busy. Focused on clients. Delivering the work. Running the day-to-day. Marketing becomes something that happens when there’s time. Or when there’s a need. Which usually means… too late. I know this because I was exactly the same. For years, I was helping clients build strong, consistent brands… while my own marketing was a series of stop-start efforts. Then I attended an Entrepreneurs Circle conference in 2024 and one word stuck: PERSISTENCE. Not the idea of it. The application of it. Every week.

What changed when I committed to consistency?

I stopped overthinking it. Instead of trying to create the “perfect” piece of marketing or worrying about whether it was too salesy, I simply started sharing what we actually do. Real projects. Real decisions. Real outcomes. And I committed to doing it regularly.

  • Weekly blogs.
  • Weekly emails.
  • Daily social posts.
  • Regular direct mail.

Not perfectly. Not always polished to within an inch of its life. But consistently. People started to notice.

“I didn’t know you did that too.”

“Good timing — we were just thinking about this.”

“I’ve been seeing your posts everywhere.”

That visibility turned into real work. Trackable turnover, yes – but also something more valuable. Existing clients coming back more often. New clients arriving already understanding what we do. Not because of one piece of marketing. Because of all of it, working together.

Why does consistency matter so much?

Because marketing is rarely about a single moment. It’s about accumulation. One post won’t change much. One email might get missed. One piece of direct mail might land at the wrong time. But together, over time, they start to build familiarity. People begin to recognise you. They remember you. They trust you. And when the timing is right, you’re already front of mind.

Where does “good enough” fit into this?

Tools like Canva and AI have made it easier than ever to create something. And that’s not a bad thing. But there’s a difference between producing something quickly and building something properly. I often see businesses creating “good enough” marketing… but doing it inconsistently. That combination is where things really fall down. Because if you’re going to show up regularly, what you’re putting out there needs to represent you well.

So what’s the balance?

It’s not perfection. It’s not constant reinvention. It’s strong, well-thought-through design, applied consistently over time. That’s where the shift happens. That’s where marketing stops feeling like effort and starts becoming momentum.

The simple truth

Most marketing isn’t failing because of poor ideas. It’s failing because it’s patchy. Start showing up consistently. Make sure what you’re putting out there is doing your business justice. Because when you combine the two… Design + Persistence = Three.
