First Friday Network

Many of you will already know that I started the First Friday Network in Chichester over two decades ago – but for those who don’t, here’s the story of how it all began.

Sometimes, you do something that simply clicks with people. Back in March 2003, I was standing at the end of the bar in the Ship Hotel (now the Harbour Hotel) in North Street, Chichester. Having recently moved my business from London, I was keen to meet other local businesses – but I realised not everyone wanted to commit to a subscription, weekly meetings or 7am breakfasts! So I put the word out: I’d be at the bar on the first Friday of the month, open to a chat with any local business owner who fancied a drink and a conversation. No lock-outs, no forced referrals, and no fees.

What started as a simple idea quickly gathered momentum. The Chichester Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development team at the council kindly supported and promoted the idea, and the event started to appear on people’s networking calendars. Before long, others were asking if I had plans to run it in different towns... and so the network grew organically!

Fast forward to 2025, and First Friday is still going strong. There have been more than 40 groups over the years and currently there are still groups meeting across the South East – all under the same banner but independently run by local businesspeople who understand the value of building strong connections in their communities.

So what makes First Friday different?

Well, it’s not just another networking event. There’s no entry fee, no pre-booking, and absolutely no pressure to deliver a rehearsed elevator pitch. It’s simply an informal gathering in a relaxed, welcoming environment where conversations flow naturally – and where connections are built on genuine interest, not hard sales.

There’s something refreshingly simple about turning up, having a chat and seeing where the conversation takes you. And that’s always been the heart of the First Friday approach. Referrals happen organically when the fit is right – no need to force it.

I’m hugely grateful to all the amazing businesses who have supported the network over the years, and to the brilliant venues and hosts who help create such a positive atmosphere at every meeting. Your support keeps the spirit of First Friday alive.

If you’ve never been before – come along! You might just find a great contact, a new supplier, or even a friend. And if you have been – thank you for being part of something that’s still relevant, over 20 years on.
